Folder "" isn't accessible.

We recently began having problems with Word 2000. We keep the data folder on
a server which all of the attached workstations can access fully. Recently,
on first one, then two.. now over half of our workstations refuse to save
anything to that folder after a first successful attempt. the message "The
folder "location" isn't accessible. Folder may be located on an anavailable
volume or protected with a password." No settings have been changed on the
file server. Some workstations have no problems accessing the file server.
Some do. Any ideas? First save always works regardless, it's the next save
when using same application of Word.

started having same problem last thursday 2-17-05 after ms updates applied
night before with word 2002 on xp pro os. we have four machines with xp pro,
and three have this problem. i have disabled all security settings in xp os
dealing with network issues, and disabled norton antivirus word plug in
without success. all updates applied to word, xp pro, and norton antivirus,
except that xp pro service pack II not installed due to known conflicts with
norton pcanywhere. i have noticed that i can save as to local hard drive,
but cannot save as to mapped network drive. machines with win98 os and word
installed are not experiencing this problem in our shop. fortunately we have
only converted four machines to xp pro. unless we can identify work around,
we will return all our boxes to win98.... shame this appears to be a
security issue with word and xp pro operating with a server using win98 in
peer to peer enviroment. how does this compare with your experience?

Having similar problem. Problem appeared last Thursday 2-15-05 after ms
security updates applied the night before. No problem on machines on network
using win98 os, only those with word 2002 installed on xp pro os boxes. i
have attempted to disable all security permission dealing with network on xp
pro os, without success. turned of norton 2003 antiviruse word plugin
without success. noticed that can save as to local hard drive, and then cut
and paste to desired mapped network drive. is your server on peer to peer
network? is your server running win98 or win98se?

Amazingly enough Jim, our situation does seem similar. We use a Win98
computer as our main file server, and the workstations are all Win2000
professional. The ones that seem to not be experiencing any problems are the
ones that have not had the latest security updates. We are going to attempt
to remove the security updates from a single workstation to see if that
solves our issue. If not, we will try the server.

Our data server is Win98se, peer to peer network, with a Server2000 acting
only as a network sign-in.

Uninstall HotFix 885250. Go to the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and
make sure that the Show Updates check box at the top of the dialog is
checked. Then scroll down to KB885250 and uninstall it.

The problem seems to be restricted to users with a peer-to-peer network,
using a Windows 98 PC as a server. Please call Microsoft and report this
problem (see
http://www.support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=8101&gprid=273354 )
: note calls for reporting HotFix bugs are free.

I'm not sure why Microsoft hasn't offered this as a help, but if you wish to
leave the security update in place, as long as you use the ".dot" extention
typed after the filename, it WILL save. but you have to actually type the
extention on the filename by yourself. We of course are taking Microsoft's
name in vain and removing their Security Update that caused the problem to
begin with.
