Recently, the following things happened, though I cannot say what caused what.
1) The size of my mailbox on our Exchange server increased to 6GB. I don't know whether it gradually got that big, or spiked that big suddenly (perhaps because of what I describe below). It was certainly large before and may have exceeded its limitations.
2) Entourage essentially "froze" in the process of syncing itself with the server and would not function. It was locked in constant and slow syncing.
3) All of the folders and subfolders that I use to sort mail got scrambled, and multiple copies of many of the folders were randomly reproduced in various places in the folder structure. In some cases, more than 30 copies of some of the root folders appear in various locations throughout the folder tree. In a few cases, copies appear as subfolders of themselves. Some of these cloned folders have complete contents, others only part of the original contents, and others no contents.
In an attempt to get things working again, I copied all of the folders in the folder tree from the Exchange Server to the "On my Computer" folder in Entourage, i.e., to my local hard drive. However, the scrambled folder tree remains scrambled.
I am part way through the process of sorting these folders manually. However, this morning, Entourage said my Office database was damaged and asked me to fix it. Which I did. It's running now.
I would like to get a better understanding of what happened. Also, I would like to know whether the database repair utility would fix this problem more quickly and efficiently than doing it by hand.
If the utility would do the job, should I run it on the partially repaird folders, or on the unrepaired scrambled folders as they existed when I moved them to my hard drive? I backed up the unrepaired folders, and could work on those with some guidance as to how to make them part of Entourage again.
