Folders written by Word 2000, but changed to Word 2003

Hi:
By using "Micro Vault, Virtual Expander," I bakced up some folders which
were
written by Word 2000. This is my first computer and mostly used.

However, when I tried to look at those files by clicking Icon on the second
computer,
the box popping up in the middle of the screen, 'Word 2003,' not 'Word
2000.'
Hence, on the second computer I am not able to access the folder written by
Word 2000
on the first computer.

My question is:
How am I able to look at the files written by Word 2000 on the second
computer?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Well a folder is not written in Word 2000. Word created documents which are
saves as files with and extension .doc. These are stored in Folders created
by Windows. Word 2003 will open .doc files that were created in previous
versions of Word. So all you need to do is transfer the files from one PC to
the other.

Open Windows Explorer and drag and drop the doc files from My Documents or
whichever folder you store your docs, and drop them onto the memory stick.
On the new computer do the reverse: drag the doc files from the memory stick
into My Documents using Windows Explorer again.

Double-clicking on any of these transferred documents should launch Word2003
and display the documents for reading or editing.

Hi:
Thanks for the response. I truly appreciate it.

I understand I've been using 'older version' of Word, then because of
this incident, I started thinking about 'upgrade' the Word, to '2003.'

If I do/upgrade from Word, 2000 to Word 2003, does this issue
never occur? Only I need to do is transfer files from the first computer
to the second computer, ... without seeing the Box popping up in the
middle of the screen?

Thanks Again.

You only see a box popping up if you are opening a file that is NOT in any
Word format (say a WordPerfect document) and then only if you have the
Confirm Conversion on Open option enabled. So you you never see that when
opening Word documents in Word 2003.

Hi Terry Farrell:
I went to the local computer stores(2) looking for Word 2003.

However, both of stores has NO Word 2003, ... need to buy a whole set,
MS Office. Then, I came to the Internet searching for Word 2003 that
directed
me to the Amazon Com. They have both 'new' and 'used.'

It's quite confusing for me to pick which one, ... new or used? Since there
is no
problem on Word 2000, except 'memory stick' about which I mentioned, above.

The site is as follows;
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...0?ie=UTF8&startIndex=0&seller=&condition=used

Wonder whether it is a good 'bargain' to purchase, ... or should I go to the
'brand new' Word 2003
around $95.00 at the Amazon Com.

Your opinion would be greately appreciated.

Thanks,

There is no such thing as legitimate "used" software. There is essentially
no easy way to transfer the license of software that has been installed and
activated. You should still be able to buy Office 2003 new, however, since
Office 2007 is not yet available for retail sale.

Dear Suzanne S. Barnhill:
Thanks for the response. I truly appreciate it.

When I visited one of computer stores nearby my home, a sales associate
told me that only way I can obtain is through the Internet, mostly likely
'Amazone Com.'

Probably, I'd better off to make a trip to another computer store in nearby
State
for purchasing a brand new Word 2003, priced around $109.00.

Also, once purchased Word 2003, I need to install it on four PCs/HP and one
Notebook.
Then, I can not take any chance, such as an 'illegitamate CD.'

Thanks again.

Office/Word 2003 is licensed for only two machines: one desktop and one
laptop, assumed to be used (not simultaneously) by the same user. For your
purposes, you need a volume license. Alternatively, if you qualify for the
Student & Teacher version, I believe it can be installed on three (or
possibly more) machines, but you'd still need more than one license.

Also, if you just need Word and don't have to have Word 2003, it would
probably be cheaper to get Works Suite, which includes Word 2002, than to
buy Word 2003 freestanding.

Hi Suznne S. Barnhill:
Thanks for the response. I truly appreciate your knowledgeable respone to
my question.

To be honest and frank, I do NOT like to get Word 2003, mainly because I am
happy with
Word 2000. Another issue is a cost, .... due to X-mas time.

As I mentioned in my previous response, I got in a trouble with opening the
folders written by
Word 2000 when I tried to transfer it to the different computer. It's
converted to Word 2003,
not Word 2000, hence, I am unable to access the folders written by Word
2000.

I downloaded 'Word 2003 Viewer' in my attempt to open the folders
successfuly, but to no avail.

Only thing for transferring, I need to install Word 2003. That is a pain,
.... but again I need to
spend a money to get the job done.

Any good suggestions?

Getting back to your original problem: There is no such thing as a Word 2000
or Word 2003 folder. There is not even really a distinction between Word
2000 and 2003 files (they both have the same file format). It sounds as if
you're seeing different icons for the documents or folders, but I think they
are meaningless. If you install Word 2000 on the new computer, you should be
able to open the files you created with it. If Word 2000 (or Office 2000)
came installed on the previous computer, however, then it is not licensed
for any computer but the one it came with, so you will have to get some
version of Word. The viewer allows you to open and print files, but not edit
them, so it is not a long-term solution if you need to create new files.

I think we need to back up and get a description of exactly what your new
setup is (is Word 2000 installed on the new machine?) and what happens when
you try to open the old files? Are you trying to open from the hard drive or
from some kind of removable media, for example?

Hi Suzanne S. Barnhill:
I installed Word 2000 in both computers by using CD I purchased from Staple.

When I attempted to transfer the folders/files written by Word 2000 to the
second
computer by using 'Microvault'/Virtual Expander flashmodel by Sony priced
$20.00
on sale from Staple, a box popping up in the middle of the screen, .....
------------
Word 2003, 'user's information' along with Product Key ----

I do not have Product key because I never have Word 2003 on both computers.
Mine is Word 2000 on both computers.

Hence, I am not able to open and read the folders.

Thanks again.

How were you attempting to transfer the files? If you just copy them from
the flash drive to the hard drive using Windows Explorer, then you should
not get any such message, nor would I expect such a message on opening the
files. What may well have happened, however, is that the new computer,
unbeknownst to you, had a trial version of Office 2003 installed; you might
be prompted to activate Word 2003 when you attempted to open a file. If you
prefer to use Word 2000, you should go to Control Panel | Add/Remove
Programs and uninstall the Office 2003 trial version.

Dear Suzanne S. Barnhill:

It's done!
Everything is OK, now after having followed the instruction about
which you detailed. I uninstalled 'Word 2003 trial version' and
afterwards I went to the first computer for saving folders and
came to the second computer to look at folders. Every files
in the first computer showed on the the second computer without any
problems. I still love Word 2000!

Many, many thanks for your endless help on this regard.

I truly, truly appreciate it.

Thanks AGAIN.

So do I love Word 2000, and I also love Suzanne's invariable, inevitable and
indubitable solving of our problems.
