Foldershare.com a Sharing Option for Onenote 2007?

S

SC

I am currently using Foldershare.com successfully on two different computers
to have access to my files (spreadsheets and jpegs) that I want at all times
on both machines. This has worked pretty flawlessly and pretty easy for a
rookie as myself.

I have two tablets that I always want my Onenote 2007 60 day trial data to
always be in sync.

Is life that easy and I could point foldershare.com to just point to each
"Onenote Notebooks" in the "My Documents" of both machines and I am happily
always in sync?

No, you do NOT want to use foldershare.com with OneNote 2007. OneNote
2007 has a built-in synchronization mechanism that is a lot more
sophisticated than a purely file-based mechanism like foldershare.com
could ever be.
Are your two computers ever on the same network? E.g. a wireless LAN at
home or work?

Quite honestly, it depends on what the person wants to do...
Foldershare is terrific if you have no need to work collaboratively
using ON's feature set, but you want to make sure any updates you make
at another location (like, work), are sync'd to your home pc's data
files.

I use Foldershare, Avvenu and Mozy all together on two machines, b/c no
one vendor (or piece of software) does what I need it to do. Mozy =
backups, Avvenu = remote control, real-time storage of my data to the
web so I can retrieve it from another computer or my Treo (and use
Google Desktop to search remotely, just very cool, and Foldershare =
sync two computers that I use interchangeably at times.

The nice thing is that they all play very well together. I'd love for
WindowsLive to provide cloud data storage that's sync'd to my pc, so if
the internet is unavailable, I'd still have my stuff.

Patrick,
Regarding if my two tablets are ever on the same network, Yes, when I am
home at nite, I could have them on my home wireless network.

Two people have now told or indicated that Foldershare would work like
this...I am confused how to get this acomplished now. In a super world, I
would like to have my office computer also in on the threesome so I would
have my ON 2007 files always in tune.

Am I pushing the limits to have this?

What I don't understand is, if I can currently have Foldershare keep say a
spreadsheet happily the same on two computers. Why can't Foldershare keep all
my Onenote files in both locations in sync?

You can use Foldershare, but what if you made changes to the same
OneNote section or page on both computers before Foldershare syncs them?
Or, even at the same time?
Foldershare can't handle that situation. That's the same situation that
it can't handle synching changes made on both computers to the same
spreadsheet.
The cool thing about OneNote 2007 though is, that its built-in
synchronization mechanism can handle that. You can literally have the
same page open on both computers and work on the same page at the same
time (the only time you get in trouble is when you are modifying the
same note container at the same time). I have a tablet and a desktop.
OneNote is always open on both, and they sit next to each other on my
desk. I might work in different sections at one time, but often, I have
the same section (a section is a OneNote file, the smallest unit
Foldershare can handle) open and I am working on two different pages in
that section. With the built-in synch mechanism of ON, I never have to
worry that I made sure to properly synch my files before doing any of
that. I actually never have to worry about synching, because it synchs
automatically while ON is open. So if I walk with my tablet into my appt
and it finds my WLAN, it starts synching (because OneNote is always
open).

Clearly, if you need the capability to edit pages or sections _at the
SAME time_ then using OneNote's sync features is the only sane way to
go, no question. But I don't think that's what he needs...

To answer your question, Foldershare works really well with OneNote
because the .one files are opened as needed. So, you make a change to
a page within a section, and as soon as OneNote releases it,
Foldershare grabs it and sends it to the linked pc. Voila, ON files in
perfect harmony.

If for some reason, one computer (A) is off, you update a page and then
you go home and start your other computer (B), odds are Foldershare
will see the change from the original computer and sync your files
before you can even open OneNote. If however, the first PC (A) is off
when you turn on PC B and you edit the same page or section, when
Foldershare sees that both files have changed, it'll call it to your
attention for resolution. At that point, it's a pretty manual thing to
figure out what's changed in each file.

But again, I don't think that's what he needs. If he's the only one
modifying the files on each computer, Foldershare should work great. I
would love to use ON's sync features, but not enough people in my
office use it, and storing the files on the network drives is another
problem I don't need to deal with at the moment. :)

OneNote has a built-in replcation engine, and Excel does not.

If you can set your workflow such that you can guarantee that you will
completely sync the files on one computer before you access them with the
other, something like FS should be OK as a file-level sync tool. Be
aware that it's not a supported configuration.

I would start at Sourceforge:

http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=webdav

Patrick (or anybody else),

I have a host account that has plenty of storage and transfer, but
doesn't support webdav. I have heard of an open source software that
will allow me to map a drive to my server, which I could then use as
my backup drive. Do you know where I might find this?
