Font behavior and formatting problems in Word 98

H

Hratch Papazian

Word 98 on a PowerBook G3.
One of the postscript fonts I use to write diacritics not found in Symbol no
longer displays properly in sizes 13 and 14. All other sizes are fine, as is
the printing. For sizes 13 and 14 it now displays the equivalent values of
the default font.

Following the display problem, the formatting in parts of the document I've
been working on became erratic: footnotes spread over 5 pages were suddenly
grouped on one; a couple of pages were left blank half-way down the 45-page
document with their contents pushed down and could not be brought back; the
occasional type 2 and 11 errors popped up as well. Other Word 98 documents
containing this font exhibit the same problem, though without any formatting
irregularities.

Based on some excellent recommendations posted here, I already tried the
following with no results:

-Increased memory to Word to 48000 initially, and then to 60000.
-Fearing a corrupted document, I copied it (except the last paragraph mark)
and saved it in a fresh one with a new name.
-Removed "Word settings" from the System and "Normal" template and
re-launched Word.
-Ran Diskwarrior twice and all was fine.
-Reinstalled a fresh copy of the font and keyboard layout.

I should add that saving the document as Word 5.1 and opening it in my old
Word 5 resolves all of the above problems; likewise for saving and viewing
it as HTML. But once I bring it back to Word 98, the same problems persist.
The font in question works fine in all other applications.

Before I do a complete remove and reinstall of Office 98, I thought someone
would have some suggestions.

Many thanks.
