Is it possible to make Microsoft Word use Safari's Font Book instead of
Word's awkward font lists? Thanks for any suggestions.

If you mean the Cocoa font pane you see in TextEdit and
Omni-everything, then no.

If you mean "does Word display only the fonts you currently have
enabled via Font Book?" then yes (most of the time - just in case you
have not been following the excellent thread about Word
(re)-installling its own fonts for every user)

...at least, that's what happening here v.X 10.1.6, OS X 10.3.8

also note that you can reduce the awkwardness with the keyboard...
(useful if you have dozens of fonts active)
With the font drop down llist open, start typing the font name. That
will scroll it to the appropriate part of the list.

Note this trick works for (almost) every menu of (almost) every
application.

You will have to turn off the wysiwyg font and style menu preference in
Word to make this trick work.
