Font Color Suddenly Changes To Red

F

Frank

I have suddenly experienced a problem in getting text to print to my HP
2610 printer in the proper color. If I ask for black, I get red. It
always prints to red when I ask for black and I have been very careful
to insure that I am actually choosing black as the font color. If I ask
for any other color it will print out whatever the color red mixed with
that color would produce, or pretty close to it.

My old documents created prior to the last three days print fine. All
of my documents print fine when placed in text edit. All documents
print fine to my HP 1200dtn printer and also to my HP 2100tn however
that one is black and white only. Anything I print on the HP 2610 from
the internet prints just fine, photoshop prints fine, Entorouge prints
fine, ICal prints fine, Now Up-To-Date prints fine, Excel seem to not
be having this issue as of yet - only issue is with Word documents
created in the last two or three days. I seem to only be having
problems with documents created in the last three days and have no idea
what I may or may not have done to cause this issue to crop up. If I
past a current documents text into a file that was created four or five
days ago it then prints out in the proper color. I am really at a loss
as to what may be taking place as this seems to be only happening on
anything I create new in the last two or three days.

I am using a Macintosh G4 AGP 450 with 1 gig of ram using OS X 10.4.3.
I am running Office X with the Word version of 10.1.7. All current
updates have been applied to this version of Office X. Any suggestions
as to what to look for or perhaps change would be most welcome. Thank
you

Bob,

I created a new normal template according to the instructions in the
document you directed me to. The new normal template indicated that
black was the automatic color choice and black text was indeed showing
on my monitor. I printed out the text and it came out red again. I then
changed the font color to blue and it printed blue and not a blend of
the red and blue colors. I changed it back to black and it again
printed out in red. My documents created earlier than two or three days
ago continue to print properly and everything else I send to the
printer from other applicatiions or from the internet comes out looking
just as it should. Only newly created documents in Word are printing in
red or a blend of red and whatever other font color is chosen. When
using the black font color it always appears black on the monitor, in
preview or in a .pdf file when I make one. The .pdf file will print in
black if black was the chosen font color when creating the .pdf.

I have at this point in time created five new normal templates using
the directions in the document you had me read. All of them printed out
in red with the exception of one which printed out one copy of black
text but on the second printing changed back to red?

I await any further suggestions and advice you can offer. Thanks

Admirable patience. In your situation, I would have launched the
world's first ICBP (inter-continental ballistic printer)
One doc printed black, then red without changing anything?
It really looks like Word is lying to the printer doesn't it?

A few random things to try:-
What happens when you make a PDF and print that?
What happens if you Page set up to "any printer"?
Word's Track Changes preferences and current Track Changes mode.
Especially highlight changes in tools » track changes..
(That won't explain black PDFs though)

To double-check--try specifically choosing Black as the font color instead
of Automatic, which is also black. Does that still print red?

Another "Shot in teh Dark" -

Turn off the printer, shut down the computer, disconnect the printer (USB I
assume), then start the Mac up. Once it is ready to go reconnect the printer
& run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions. Then create [yet] another new
Normal, power up the printer & try again... May not help, but it can't hurt
!:)

If still no progress - How long ago did you instal the Office 10.1.7 update,
the OS X 10.4.3 - recently enough that either of them could be the culprit?
Even if not, OS X is now at 10.4.7, so you might want to d/l the *Combo*
updater - perhaps it will help in the fix.

A black text document saved to a .pdf file prints out black

I will try selecting the "any printer" choice when I get back home
tonight

I have picked black from the color chart and have had the normal
template set up for automatic also and neither one produces black text
when sent to the printer.

If I choose blue as the text color I am getting something similar to
pink as a result

I have unhooked the printer power as per HP instructions and have set
the machine back to its factory default settings via the control panel
but it did not seem to help

All of my printers (3) are connected via ethernet through a router

I have repaired permissions three times and run the Onyx software
program once

10.4.3 was installed several months back and thus far to my knowledge
has not created any issues on the machine or on any other software
package

10.1.7 Office update was applied several days ago but the issue did not
show up right after the install? ? I was in the middle of working out a
four page draft of a document I had to submit to our legal department
and had printed out two copies for proof reading when upon the third
printing I started to get the red color text and from that point on I
am unable to get this color set back to black. If the 10.1.7 update had
any effect on Word it was certainly not immediate as this issue did not
seem to crop up until well after the update was installed and several
other documents had been created and printed.

All of my older documents continue to print properly and the few new
ones that I tried to print out this morning came out in a dark red. I
had to sent the document to one of my other printers to get it to print
out properly. I find it very strange indeed that I can print anything
on the 2610 properly except any brand new documents from within Word.
To say the very least I am perplexed and confused. Again, thank you all
for your suggestions so far and I am still open to try most anything
within reason to try and resolve this issue.

Hi Frank -

First things first - since the older docs print right it suggests that
something has soured the template new docs are based on. Have a look here

http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

at the stuff about locating & testing the Normal template. Once you do
that,
launch Word, type some text & print to see what happens. If you're still
seeing red post back.

If the new doc prints OK try one that has been displaying the problem. If
it
persists you'll need to copy all but the last ¶ and paste into a new blank
doc. Repeat as necessary for any of the newer docs that don't want to play
nice.

Here is what I have found out so far this evening. I now am back to
printing black text when requesting to do so. It seems that my issue is
somehow related to the page setup dialog box in Word. I had not noticed
that for some reason my normal template had changed to an 8.5 x 11.0
letter size that had margins adjusted to 0.12" on all sides(a custom
size that I had created many months ago). When I changed this back to
US Letter 8.5 x 11.0 I had the black color return to my documents. I do
not understand how or why this would have caused the issue?

I deleted the special 8.5 x 10 setting from the custom sizes window and
then quit and restarted Word. I then again created the 8.5 x 10 custom
size with the 0.12" margins on all sides. As soon as I printed the
first document from this custom size I once again had red text ? ? ? I
do not have a clue at this point as to why this is taking place.

I tried this process five or six times and each time I was able to
repeat the red text problem. As soon as I would change the custom size
back to the default US Letter size in the page setup dialog box I would
once again be back at black text being printed. All other colors now
selected will print properly and are not a blend of red and the font
color picked.

What is causing my custom size page setup to print red when black is
selected?? The other question I have is why did this problem only occur
on the HP2610 and not on the HP1200Dtn printer. My HP2100tn Laserjet
never indicated any shading with regard to gray colors when these
documents were sent to it. Again, any suggestions would be most
welcome.

Hi Frank -

Good detective work! I don't have clue as to why or how, but as far as the
other questions...

Perhaps the custom preset was created for the one printer & snagged a little
something offish along the way that doesn't pertain to other printers - have
you tried that custom size with other *color* printers? It may not be
noticeable on the grayscale shades but they may actually be off a little as
well.

Now that its narrowed down you can go to your username\library\preferences
folder and delete (as long as you don't have other customizations to be
concerned about):

com.apple.print.custompresets.plist

Then try recreating your custom size & see if the red goes away.

Bob,

So far so good, all documents that I have wanted to print in black are
doing so. With regard to trying to print to the other color printer
with the custom size settings, yes it printed in black as requested.
For some reason the issue only seemed to involve the HP2610? The
black/gray scale colors on the HP2100Tn LaserJet could have been off
slightly but for my tired old eyes it was not noticeably evident.

In order to remove my custom size settings I had to remove the
follwoing from the preference list:
com.apple.print.custompresets.plist as well as
com.apple.print.custompapers.plist Once I had removed both of these
items all of my custom sizes were gone from the page setup menu. I
reconstructed all of the custom sizes that I had and so far when I
request black, using the custom size configurations, I ACTUALLY get
black as my printed color on the HP2610.

I want to thank everyone on this forum for the suggestions you have
given me in getting this issue resolved. I have been reading the Office
groups for a long time and have gotten a great deal of information from
all of the users of this format, however this was my first request for
assistance from the group and I am very pleased with the responses I
have gotten. Again thanks to all.

color picked.

What is causing my custom size page setup to print red when black is
selected?? The other question I have is why did this problem only occur
on the HP2610 and not on the HP1200Dtn printer. My HP2100tn Laserjet
never indicated any shading with regard to gray colors when these
documents were sent to it. Again, any suggestions would be most
welcome.

Bob and All,

Thanks for the quick reply to my inquiry. I appreciate your assistance
in this matter and hope that a resolution can be quickly and easily
reached.

If still no progress - How long ago did you instal the Office 10.1.7 update,

Thanks

Frank

First things first - since the older docs print right it suggests that
something has soured the template new docs are based on. Have a lookhere

http://word.mvps.org/mac/MacWordNormal.html

at the stuff about locating & testing the Normal template. Once you do
that,
launch Word, type some text & print to see what happens. If you're still
seeing red post back.

If the new doc prints OK try one that has been displaying the problem. If
it
persists you'll need to copy all but the last ¶ and paste into a new blank
doc. Repeat as necessary for any of the newer docs that don't want to play
nice.

I have suddenly experienced a problem in getting text to print to my HP
2610 printer in the proper color. If I ask for black, I get red. It
always prints to red when I ask for black and I have been very careful
to insure that I am actually choosing black as the font color. If Iask
for any other color it will print out whatever the color red mixed with
that color would produce, or pretty close to it.

I am using a Macintosh G4 AGP 450 with 1 gig of ram using OS X 10.4..3.
I am running Office X with the Word version of 10.1.7. All current
updates have been applied to this version of Office X. Any suggestions
as to what to look for or perhaps change would be most welcome. Thank
you

Frank

Hi Frank -

Good detective work! I don't have clue as to why or how, but as far as the
other questions...

Perhaps the custom preset was created for the one printer & snagged a
little
something offish along the way that doesn't pertain to other printers -
have
you tried that custom size with other *color* printers? It may not be
noticeable on the grayscale shades but they may actually be off a little
as
well.

Now that its narrowed down you can go to your username\library\preferences
folder and delete (as long as you don't have other customizations to be
concerned about):

com.apple.print.custompresets.plist

Then try recreating your custom size & see if the red goes away.
