Font command in Formatting Palette

N

Neil Glassman

The font command in the formatting palette has a convenient list of fonts
"above the line" which, I imagine, is for frequently used fonts. Is there
any way to control which fonts are above the line. A font I use frequently,
Verdana, never seems to appear there for new documents, while fonts selected
later do appear.

Thanks,
Neil

When you first start a session with Word, the fonts that are included in
styles in the Normal template are placed above the line. Any use of
additional fonts places them above the line for the session only.

To put Verdana there, create a new style or edit an old one in a
document based on the Normal template (which is the default). Be sure to
check the "add to template" checkbox. Make sure Word saves the Normal
template (again the default).

From then on, Verdana will open above the line.

Hi Neil,

As far as I can tell from experimenting, here's how the "above the line"
feature works (in Word 2001 but I'm not aware of this changing in Word X).

A maximum of 6 fonts are listed "above the line". If you have six fonts
there and change to a new font, the oldest on the list will drop off and the
new font will be added to the top of the list.

When you open a new document (based on your Normal template, which it will
be by default unless you specify another template), the "above the line"
fonts will be identical to those in the last document you had open,
regardless of what your default font is set to be. IOW, the new document
will open with your default font selected but the "above the line" fonts
won't show the default font unless it was one of the last six used in the
last-opened document.

So, if you want Verdana to show "above the line", just select it. If
Verdana is your default font and you open a new document and it doesn't show
"above the line", just re-select it (even though it's already selected).

Hope this helps.

Hi Again,

J.E. (see his previous post on this thread) is right in that the "above the
line" fonts only stick for the current session. If you close and reopen
Word, your default font *will* show up above the line.

However, J.E., I can't verify this: "When you first start a session with
Word, the fonts that are included in styles in the Normal template are
placed above the line."

The default font in my Normal template for Normal style is Arial which
*does* show above the line when I first start a session. But my default
Heading fonts in the Normal template are all Helvetica which does *not* show
above the line.

You're right - I was mistaken. I was seeing an artifact of having the
new style be one that's *applied* to a paragraph in the Normal template.

In that case, when you first hit the Font dropdown when that style is
listed, the font is listed, and immediately goes up above the line.

However, if the font isn't used on a paragraph, it indeed doesn't go
above the line.

Sorry for wasting your time!

You didn't! I learned something. That's never a waste of time :).
