Font crashing

Threads show font problems are ordinary issues. Here's mine. I have
just installed Office 2004 on my Mac G4, 1.5 meg RAM, 1 gig free
space, OS 10.3.5. The font menu does not drop down. I can access the
fonts thru 'format'. The font menu avaible in the formatting palette
does drop down, but the display is either double printed, or as I
scroll down, replaced by grayed out areas. If I continue to scroll to
the bottom of the list, Word quits. I'm a writer and an unstable Word
is a catasrophe. Thanks.

What you've described is, AFAICT, most likely to be a bad font. Try
troubleshooting your fonts via the procedure here:

Following your suggestion concerning fonts as the likely suspect, I
imported all my fonts into 'Font Book.' Font book tags all duplicates.
I found 2 dozen. After removing them, Word's font menu dropped and
the formatting palette didn't crash the application. For others with a
similar problem with the MAC Office, I'd suggest starting with Font
Book. Thanks.
