I reinstalled office 2004 and when I start up the message comes " the
font xxx is corrupted and needs to be removed".
I reinstalled office from the disk but this does not seem to be the
problem.

Nope, you need to find the font you see in the error message and replace
it with a clean copy.

It could be that the Office font cache is corrupted and the font is
perfectly OK though. You can also consider trashing the Office font
cache that's in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft (make sure no Office app
is running before you trash it).
The cache will be re-created clean from scratch. THat's not a bad thing
to do anyway.

????? You replaced it with what ??
This folder is used by Office to install the fonts in the
~/Library/Fonts. If anything, you should have replaced the fonts in
~/Library/Fonts with a copy of the ones in this folder.
The FontBook application had no reason to be implicated either. I wonder
how you replaed it. If I were you, i'd run to DiskUtility to repair
Permissions on your drive (select the drive in the list and click on the
repair Permissions button).

You can scan your fonts with Fontbook to try and find one that would
indeed be corrupted.

I have no idea what has been done up to this point (and wouldn't be
surprised if some of the previous actions may have caused new problems),
but:

*If* you are running Tiger (OS 10.4), there is a known issue with corrupt
font messages. Do you get messages for multiple fonts, but the apps run
fine once you've clicked okay to the corrupt font info?

If that description does not match your problem exactly, then please ignore
the rest of this message.

*If* that description does match your problem--OS 10.4 and multiple font
error messages *only* in Office applications, then please see the post from
Beth Rosengard in this thread [link may break]

The original post didn't mention corruption on every font.. only on a
specific one:

I know, that's why I was so emphatic about the " *if* this describes your
problem". But I didn't read "xxx" as a font name, but as a placeholder, and
I feel like it's unclear whether "xxx" is standing in for one specific font
or many fonts.

Oops. By that I meant the original reinstallation of office, reinstalling
the font book, and messing about with the office font folder, all of which
seem likely to me to leave orphaned files around to cause issues. That
wasn't a reference to Corentin's advice to trash the Office font cache,
which is a good troubleshooting tip.

Certainly, for future reference, iMV,
I reinstalled office from the disk but this does not seem to be the
problem.

Reinstalling from the disk never helps, just about. Reinstalling office
doesn't clean up anything unless you run the Remove Office tool first,
anyhow.

This one is described in the MS knowledge base:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908466

Basically: restart the computer. Reinstall the Office 2004 SP 2 update.
