Font & formatting changes when paste from other document

I use Word 2000. When I was recently working in a
document where I was tracking changes I had problems
pasting information into that document being tracked.
When I would past text in from another document, it would
not keep the font or formatting. As a matter of fact,
you could not even read the text at all, it blacked it
out. From what I could tell there is no reason for
this. Is there some problem with pasting into a redlined
document or a special trick that I am not aware of? It
is maddening trying to do something when you cannot
figure out why it will not work. Any help would be
appreciated.

I have had better luck with saving the insert locally and
then using Insert/File to put it into the primary
document.
