Font Issues - Entourage 2004

Jason Tabarias

Hi all

I've recently upgraded to 2004 from X and I'm having a recurrence of the
same font size issues I had with X. Unfortunately, I cant recall how I fixed
the problem previously...

The problem is that when I create a HTML in font size 12, say, and someone
replies their text is in size 12 but the original quoted text I wrote is now
in size 14.

When I reply to them, they see my new text as 12, their reply as 14 and my
original as 16. Again, when they reply I see their new text as 12, my reply
as 14, their original reply as 16 and my original text as 18 and so on.

If this continues long enough, I get crazily huge text....

So far as I can tell, this is not the same as the issue detailed here:

http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq_topic/fonts.html#font4

They key differences are:
- gradually increasing font sizes, rather than a simple disparity in
perceived size
- this issue happens when I email other Mac/Entourage users also, not just
Windows users

One of the other differences between X and 2004 is the font size in 2004 is
always specified as point sizes (10, 12 etc) whereas previously Entourage X
used points and relative sizes (small, medium, large etc) and points in
various parts of the app. Not sure if its relevant here...

Thanks for your help

I think it should work without these disparities if the recipient also has
Entourage 2004 or 10.1.4. In 10.1.4 changes were made to the font size
specifications to avoid the HUGE, not incremental, differences seen on
Windows than on Mac. That's because the same point size on Windows is seen
as 33% large (4:3 ratio, actually 96:72 screen resolution disparity). That's
also why messages _from_ Windows would be seen as tiny on the Mac. So in
Entourage 10.1.4 Entourage started specifying pixels instead of points. If
the recipient can't match the pixel size exactly for its available point
sizes, it will round up - that's what you're seeing. Then when you get the
reply the sent pixel size can't be matched exactly so it's rounded up, etc.
It's incremental, so much less bothersome until you get deeply into
re-replies. But it now might occur with other Mac email programs as well as
with Windows. However if the recipient has Entourage 10.1.4 or higher or a
similarly-disposed app, you won't get any alterations.
