Font manipulation

As far as just exploring different fonts, and spacing them out, etc, it
seems that Word is really lousy. Command D, the preview at bottom screen is
really slow to show what's going on, what you are changing.

Is there any other software I can get just for this limited purpose?

Try Font Book... Look it up in the Apple Help.
