font menu in word X

with both jaguar and now panther (with font book), I'm having a problem
with the font menu - the font i want to use from the menu list is often
displaced by several items (ie in the font box on the menu, word says the
current font is something other than what it is. this appears to be the
product of all the font styles in the list not being recognized as the same
font family. anyone else having the same problem? solutions?

Delete the Office Font Cache file. That's been known to correct this
problem on several occasions. The file is located here:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office Font Cache (10)

("~" = HD/Users/<Your User> or Go -> Home)

I have the same problem with both my desktop and laptop machines. I
tried the fix and it did not clear up the problem. Is a reboot
necessary as well?

A reboot shouldn't be necessary.

First, make sure you deleted the Font Cache with all Office Apps closed
(otherwise Word will write the bad data right back to the preferences
folder when it closes).

Second, if deleting the Font Cache preference doesn't work, it may
indicate a corrupt font. See

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=313535

for a good troubleshooting procedure (ignore the article's title).
