I know that there is a way to outline fonts like in adobe illustrator but for the life of me I can't figure it out. Can someone lead me in the right direction?

PowerPoint 2008 doesn't have any functionality for
creating an outlined version of existing text
(i.e. extracting the fill and leaving the vectors).

However, you can create the appearance of outlined text
without the fills in the Format - Font dialog.
In the Text Fill section, set the text fill to No Fill,
and the text line to any other color besides the background.

If you really want to edit the paths and vectors of
the characters themselves, you'll have to right-click on
the boundary of the text box, save it as a PDF, and then
open it in a vector editing program like Illustrator.

Hope this helps.

If you're only need is for a particular stand-alone caption or "title" you
may be able to do what you're describing by creating a WordArt Object.
