font problem with Word 2004

Word 2004 seems to have problems with fonts that work perfectly in Word
X. I am in linguistics, and often need phonetic symbols (symbols of the
International Phonetic Alphabet). I am very happy that Word 2004 finally
allows me to use Unicode characters for these characters, but unhappy that
Word 2004 refuses to recognize my older phonetic fonts.

I get rectangles instead of characters, in documents. On the "insert symbol"
menu, I see letters of the Roman alphabet, presumably from some other
font. The characters print as rectangles as well.

These fonts continue to work fine with Word X. Font Doctor reports no
problem with them. Also, Word does not report any font substitution going
on.

Any suggestions?
