Font Problems Overnight

I tried to start Excel today and overnight dozens of fonts are reported as
corrupt. I didn't have this problem yesterday, haven't had any crashes etc.

It seems highly unlikely that so many fonts would suddenly become corrupted,
especially since the computer wasn't in use.

Has anyone else had this problem?

A google search suggests that others have seen this problem on
occasion. A free utility called "Font Finagler" was suggested as a
fix. I have no experience with it. Caveat emptor.

I downloaded Font finagler, ran it and both Excel and Word opened without
incident.
