font reverts to default

In my Word 97, Sometimes when I am editing a document,
especially when I 'Return' at the end of a line, the new
text, either cut & paste or typed, appears in the default
font instead of the selected font. Among the things I have
tried is 'Select All' and reselect the desired font. This
changes the hilited text but doesn't appear to change the
reverting situ. Not every docu acts this way. The situ
must be in the way I set up my page. When this is
happening I have lived with it and corrected every edit or
addition, and other times I trash the docu and start over.
It would be terriably helpful to understand what's going
on and be able to work with it. Any ideas, suggestions, or
comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, K.

Read help on how styles work and invest a bit of time in experimenting.
Don't exactly understand your problem ('situ' obviously means something
different to you); but the issues are these -- 1) Every paragraph has a
defined style. By default, this is the style 'normal'. If you want to change
the font for your document, the good way is to redefine the style, not
select the text and change the font. 2) if you do change the font by
selection, that change will persist to the next paragraph if the next
paragraph is of the same style, and the changed selection included the end
of the previous paragraph.

Learn to use styles: they save *heaps* of time once you get the hang of
them, and they are not hard to understand.
