Font style and size changes when doing a copy/paste from another doc.

I use Office:mac v.X and have had several minor, yet annoying problems
with Word that I was hoping to get some assistance dealing with here.
One of the problems is the font style and size will change in my
original document when I copy and paste the same font style and size
from another document. Also, if I delete a paragraph and move the
paragraph that is below the deleted one up to just below the paragraph
above the deleted one, the above paragraph will sometimes change to a
different font and size. Since I perform these two tasks frequently,
any help would be appreciated.

Another problem I'm having is when I choose "ignore" in
"Tools"->"spelling and grammar," it will remove the underline on that
word or phrase, but the underline will return whenever I reopen the
document. Is there a way to make it permanently "ignore" the issue?

The copying and the deleting are the same issue--you are using direct
formatting, but Word thinks in terms of style-based formatting. Here's a
good explanation:
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styles/FormatOfTextChanges.html

Styles are linked to the paragraph mark, so which style overrides depends on
which paragraph mark you deleting.

For spelling to permanently ignore a word, you need to create a custom
dictionary, then you will be able to click Add in the dialog to put the word
in the custom dictionary. Help on custom dictionary is actually pretty
good, it will tell you how to do this.

Thank you very much.

This was helpful with one exception, which was my fault for not being
clearer. I have no problem with the spelling as I do add that
word-the problem is with grammar. Many times the suggestion Word
gives me is absurd, or I just don't want to change it. In those cases I
will hit the "ignore" button and the underline will disappear until I
reopen the document, or even make some other change within the
document. Then the underline reappears under the section I had told it
to ignore. Is there a way to overcome that?

Two possibilities:

Select the text you want ignored and go to Tools | Language, and check the
"do not check spelling and grammar" box. Then Word will always skip it, but
this is all-or-nothing option, you won't get typo fixes either. I would not
recommend this, but it is possible.

A better option: in Tools | Options, Spelling & Grammar, if you click on
Settings... you may be able to customize the grammar options more to your
liking so that you don't get as many absurd suggestions.

Me, I turn off "check grammar as you type" because generally I find that
Word never flags anything I want to fix. If I'm worried, and for important
documents, I run Tools | Spelling and Grammar, but only at the very end of
editing.
