Font woes

I have several font problems that may or may not be related. I have
installed legitimate fonts in users/me/library/fonts. But a lot of these
don't turn up in the Office Word drop down box of the format toolbar
or palette. They do appear if I go to the Menubar Format>fonts. When
I select a font, it doesn't always appear as the one I chose - usually the
one ahead of it on the list. Also, some documents that people send
me, keep reverting to Times Roman, even though I have the original
font installed. At the direction of Microsoft support I've deleted
preferences, uninstalled and reinstalled Office, but the same problems
persist.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Did you (a) delete the preferences with all Office apps closed? and
(b) delete the Office Font Cache (X)?

I definitely deleted the preferences with all the programs closed but
have not tried deleting the font cache (I'll have to look around and find
that).

Hi J.E.,
Thanks for your reply. Here's what I've discovered - the problem font
(what everything keeps reverting to) appears to be something called
Times. It is in the folder system>library>fonts. However, almost all
my other fonts are in the folder users>me>library>fonts.
There is no Times font in the latter (there's Times CE, Times New
Roman etc but no times).
I read the Mac Knowledge Base article on location of fonts but to be
honest, I didn't fully understand - at least not how it might relate to
this problem.
Any suggestions,
