Fonts change by themselves

I am using Word 2000 and suddenly have a problem with the fonts changing by
themselves in saved documents. I have a Christmas invitation I use every year
- open it and just change the date for the current year. Today when I opened
last year's saved copy, the fonts changed from Park Avenue to TNR, the size
was all off, and the printing was all over the page. I had to redo the
document. Any idea why this is happening? I have used this same doc over and
over (once a year) since 2003. I tried opening all of the past years copies
and each one had changed.
Thanks

I have more info. on this problem....I just realized that any document I open
has had it's fonts changed. The drop down font box and size box will show
what it is "supposed" to be - Park Avenue 22 - but the text is not in that
font.
thanks again

Have you checked that you really still have Park Avenue font in the
C:\Windows\Fonts folder, and that you can see and print text in that font?
The font file might have been moved, removed, or damaged so that Word can't
use it.

When Word is told to use a particular font that isn't available, it still
shows that name in the font dropdown, but it substitutes another font in the
document. With an affected document open, go to the Tools/Options dialog,
click the Compatibility tab, and click the Font Substitution box. Does it
say that any fonts are being substituted?

Thanks, Jay. I had checked in windows\fonts and saw 2 Park Avenues....the TT
font Park Avenue D is there. The other Park Ave - an icon with an "a" which
is the Microsoft font shows but isn't found and can't open. The "a" (small
letter) also has an arrow on it; other icons with "A" (capital A) have no
arrow and you can click on the font and open it. I found several this way.
When I followed your directions and checked in options, it says the doc font
is Park Ave but the font is missing and TNR is the substitution. In the drop
down in Word, Park AveD is there and I can use it in a new document.

Any idea waht has caused these fonts to disappear? And what do I do to get
them back? When I tried to install new fonts, only the True Type fonts show
up, such as the Park Avenue D and they are already installed. Most all of the
fonts in the font folder appear to be the TT fonts....I don't know the
difference between those and the other ones.
Thanks
Martha

The ones with capital letter A are screen fonts and can't be used by Word at
all. The ones with a small letter a (really a script capital a) are Adobe
fonts. The arrow means that the fonts are actually stored elsewhere, and the
Fonts folder just has a shortcut to them. Not sure if that helps at all,
though. Which Park Avenue does your document claim to be using?

it says it uses Park Avenue which I guess is the "a" one. I changed the
substitution from TNR to Park Avenue D and that worked, but I have several
fonts that have disappeared...Zurich Calligraphy is another......that doesn't
even show in the font folder but I have several old documents where I used it.

If you want to use these fonts, you'll need to find the font files and
install them.
