Fonts families lost; all fonts listed separately in menu

In system 9.2 font families were grouped together and I could click on
a font and choose either roman or bold, and so on. In OSX each font
in a family is listed separately and it takes me forever (or so it
seems) to scroll thru the fonts. Also, in 9.2 the most recent fonts
used were put at the top of the menu; that doesn't seem to happen in
OSX. Any help to regroup my fonts into their proper families?

Not for Carbon apps like Word. There is a utility, FontSight, that will do
this for Cocoa apps, but unless the carbon app has it written into its own
code, you probably won't get those hierarchical menus back. I hope I'm
wrong.
