Fonts "Proceed With Caution"?

Font Book verification consistently says, "38 minor problems were
found. Proceed with caution". Permissions repair and font cache
cleaning makes no difference.

Hence, a few questions: 1) what effect do these "minor problems" have
on anything; 2) is there something I've not done that will clear up
the problem; and 3) if need be, and replacing the "problem" fonts with
fresh versions seems the way to go, how can I go about doing that?

Thanks for anyone's help.

Hi Dave:

"Minor Problems" can mean several things, most of which are not necessarily
anything of concern, Click the warning symbol for a fuller explanation of
the suspected issue for each font displaying one.

Font problems can cause documents to not display properly, prevent files
from opening & if serious enough can cause programs to crash or not launch
at all. My personal policy is to either remove or replace any that don't
display an OK check when validated.

There really isn't much you can do to repair a damaged font. If you know
what you're doing -- dependent on the nature of the damage -- there are font
utility apps which may help. For most people the simplest tack is to simply
re-install the font. Some fonts come from the OS, some from the programs you
install & others from independent sources. Check your install disks for any
you need to replace -- the Fonts folder they're stored in on your HD is
often a pretty good indicator of where they came fro as is the Show Font
Info command in Font Book's Preview menu.

Bob, thanks for the info. And, lo and behold, I stumbled upon a very
near complete solution. With Font Book open -- I don't know why I
didn't notice this earlier -- it turns out that my "problem" fonts
also are almost always *duplicate* fonts.

In brief, I did a font verification for the entire lot, selected
[show] "Warnings" in the Font Validation window drop-down menu, and
then noticed that the listed "problem" fonts coincided with those with
that little black dot indicating there were duplicates there. I
removed all the black-dot fonts. Presto! A second font verification
showed everything was in good order. Almost.

There were two exceptions, and neither showed up as being duplicates.
"Bauhaus 93" and "MT Extra", for some reason, still are on the
"problem" font list. That's not bad, two left out of thirty eight. I'm
going to see whether I can selectively re-install these two from my
Leopard disc.

Remove them. Place in Fonts Disabled folder in Library. If they are needed
you'll get a warning. I had the same error on the Bauhaus 93
