Fonts selected from font menu are "pixelized" and print that way as well

Hello,
I have Mac OSX, and run Office: Word 2001 in Classic Mode. I have
fonts installed in my System 10 Library and in the System 9 font
folder. For some reason when I start a word document, all my fonts are
listed in the font menu, but when I select them they are pixelized,
and print that way as well. The vast majority of my 500+ font
collection have this problem. Most are true type and adobe. I have
tried re-installing word, throwing away the font substitution and font
cache in the System 9 preferences folder, even the Office preference
cache, and nothing has worked. I have ended up writing documents in
word to use the grammar and spell check and then importing them into
Illustrator or Quark for formatting. Would like to be able to use Word
for everything occasionally! Can someone please advise?

Do you have Adobe Type Manager 6.2 Lite installed? You need it in Classic
for the Adobe fonts, especially if they are Postscript T-1, otherwise you'll
have bitmapped jaggies in the display and printout. If you don't have ATM
Lite, it's a free download from Adobe.com.

OSX doesn't require ATM Lite, but the Classic system does at least for the
Adobe fonts so that they will be smoothed.

In OSX you should make sure you have Font Smoothing turned on and set to
smooth fonts down to at least 8 points.

Gene,
Thanks so much! Your advice re: installing ATM Lite was all I needed,
and it solved all my font issues with apps running in Classic.
