Fonts/ Symbols lost after moving MS office to new mac

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) Processor: Power PC Hi,
I got a new laptop and transferred MS office from my old mac to my new mac using an external hard-drive (by just dragging and dropping). I entered my product key and now office seems to be working fine. However, in Microsoft word a bunch of the symbols are now missing that were present in the version on my old mac, like the yin yang symbol and a bunch of other ones that I need. The insert symbol palate just doesn't have them. Additionally it looks like some fonts are missing. Where did they go and how can I get them back? Thank you so much!

You haven't installed the fonts. Run an installation from the CD and it
will put them in.

Cheers

Hi John,

Thank you so much for you help! Unfortunately I don't have a CD, I downloaded the program from Mactopia. I tried looking in the Microsoft Office 2008 folder in my applications folder, but didn't see any files that would be useful - let me know if there is something else I should do! Thank you so much!!

Hmmm... I don't know how to help you.

If you purchased the download via Mactopia/Digital River, you would have
been sent a download key that gives you the full version of the product.

If you downloaded the Trial Version, it's not complete, and not compatible
with the paid version. If you mix the Trial and Paid versions by copying
from one to the other, very strange things happen.

The only thing I can suggest is to run the "Remove Office" tool, then buy
again.

Sorry.

I used the trial version, then bought it from Mactopia, and was given a product key and everything. I paid for the full version of the product, but I guess now cannot access it. I'm not sure if this is an issue I can take up with their customer service folks. Should you be able to expect that the MS office product you purchased should work fully on your new computer that you transferred it to?

Yes, if you "Transfer" your licence from the old computer to the new
computer, you should expect that you have a fully-working installation on
the new computer (and nothing left on the old computer).

However, if you "Copy" from old to new, then you should expect it not to
work on the new.

You have only one licence to use: you need to move the licence key, you
can't "copy" it and get two working versions.

The customer service folks will be delighted to help you out on this one:
they can issue a new key and cancel your old key.

Cheers

Hi John,
Thanks for the information. I tried to contact customer service but discovered that it costs a minimum of $40 to get any help. I can't really afford that. I was thinking I would uninstall the version on my new computer and then try to "transfer" MS office, instead of "copying" it over. How exactly would I transfer it? Using a firewire cable or something? Thanks for your help!

You can't just copy it over.
You need a lot of supporting files. Of the top of my head, you also need:
- the MS support files from /Library/Application Support.
- the fonts in /Library/Fonts/Microsoft
- some of the receipts in /Library/Receipts.
etc.

On top of it, you need to make sure you don;t mess-up the permissions
in the process. It's far from trivial (and that's why we always
recommend to just use the CD, when you still have it.....)
