Fonts won't change!

This should be so simple...all I want to do is get the same font in any given document, when I've copied and pasted various bits of text within the document. So I 'select' all the text, go to 'format', then 'font,' pick my font type and size and -- well, every time, different things happen. But the upshot is, I can NEVER get the same, consistent font. What am I doing, or not doing? All I want is like, ALL THE SAME DAMN FONT. And it seems like there are five different ways to accomplish the same thing, yet none of them work. Help!

Well: yes, it *is* simple ‹ it's a single click if you set Word up to work
the way you want it to.

The thing you are "not" doing is using Styles, which are the mechanism
specifically designed to provide this feature.

Stay a mile away from the "Format>Font" and "Format>Paragraph" dialogs when
you are wanting a professional result.

Instead, use Format>Style and choose a style for the kind of text you are
creating (or make a new one...). Word names styles after the "type" of
paragraph they should be used for, but you don't have to!

Set the formatting you want for your text in the Style. Make sure you click
the "Add to template" checkbox to store the style so you can use it again in
any new documents you create.

Then simply use the Formatting Palette to apply the style to any text you
like to produce the exact formatting you defined. One click! Perfect
formatting, every time, for the rest of your life :)

Note: If you are getting documents in where people have been playing around
without using styles either, you may have to simply strip their formatting
mess away so that your style can take hold.

To do this, use Edit>Clear>Clear Formatting to set the style to "Normal",
then apply the style you created.

(It's best not to do too much customisation of the Normal style, it is used
by default all over the place, and if you change its formatting you can get
some strange side-effects.)

For more, see the Course named " Format your document by using styles" in
the Word Help.
