I have tried everything to change my fonts in a table from the dreaded Times New Roman. If I try to have a different font as default it is always added as a second default after TNR. If I try to alter the font cell by cell it often chages back to TNR
Anyone able to help?

Have you tried creating a new "Style" for the text in the
table? Format>Style>New [select "character style"],
modify the attributes as you need and give it a name
you'll recognize. Close out of Format>Style, then (1)
select all the text in your table, (2) find your new style
in the drop down list (where it probably says "normal"
currently) and (3) select your new style to apply it to
the text in your table.

What I would do is, before creating the table and typing in the information,
select the font you want to use before, then create the table. Whenever
start using a font, and I decide create a table and the font is no longer
needed it ends being applied to the table.
