Why does it take half an hour for my Excel or Word to open on my Mac, claiming that I have corrupt fonts; that only Microsoft packages claim are corrupt? All other software doesn't have a problem!

What version of Office and OS X? Have you applied the latest updates of
both?

Have you rebooted in order to force a rebuild of any font caches?

I've seen that several times on a couple of MacMinis with Office 2004,
OS 10.4.10 and each time I've found there were duplicate versions of
some fonts running, a couple of times it was the Helvetica font. HTH
