Hi, Kevin,

You're seeing the field code instead of the field result. The shortcut key
Alt+F9 toggles between the two displays (this is equivalent to going to
Tools > Options > View and checking/unchecking the "Field codes" box).

If the display of fields throughout the document is set to show results, you
can toggle a single field by clicking on it and pressing Shift+F9, or by
right-clicking and selecting Toggle Field Codes from the popup.

Jay, I see how that is supposed to work on an other
machine, but for some reason it doesn't work on this
one. I've uninstalled and re-installed the Office, no
luck. Any other ideas?
thanks

Hi, Kevin,

What do you see in the Tools > Options dialog -- is the "Field codes" box
checked or not?

What happens if you insert a field -- any field -- in a paragraph of plain
text in a page (not a header)? Can you toggle field codes/results anywhere?

<rant> I really wish Microsoft had some way to print in big letters "DON'T
TRY UNINSTALLING AND REINSTALLING OFFICE EXCEPT AS A LAST RESORT!!!!!"
across every copy of Office. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred it's a waste
of time, because the uninstaller by design will not remove Normal.dot or
registry entries -- and 99 times out of 100 that's exactly where the problem
is, or else it's operator error. </rant>

Have you tried pressing the key combination Alt-F9? This is a user or
machine setting, not saved with the document.
