footer on last page only? number of pages undetermined.

I'm assuming you are using menus in Word 2003 or earlier, if you use Word
2007, the process is basically the same but involves use of the Ribbon.
Insert a section break (Insert, Break, Section break, Next Page) before the
last page. Then view the footer of that last page, you will notice you are in
the footer of section 2 (or higher if you have more sections in your
document) and on the Header and Footer toolbar, click Link to Previous to
break the link with the previous section. You should now be able add a footer
to this section without changing earlier sections. You can type text, or use
icons on the Header and Footer toolbar to insert an automatically updating
page number and change its number format or starting number.

This procedure is really quite unnecessary. The OP has already acknowledged
that the previously posted solution is satisfactory.

Oh I'm sorry, Suzanne, I didn't see that the question had been posted twice
by the user, I answered the topmost posting.

The second post had some additional content (message body), though actually
the subject line did, in this case, say it all.

My larger point, though, was that a section break is not necessary because
the desired result can be achieved with a field. It's usually not convenient
and often quite disruptive to insert a section break where there is not even
a page break. It adds unnecessary complexity to the document, and it's
always worthwhile to avoid that, given the inevitable complexity of any Word
document to begin with!
