Footer page number 2003

Hi,

I'm using Word 2003 and have a question I cannot seem to figure out. I'm
trying to insert page numbers in a manual I'm typing. There are two pages
before the page where I'm inserting "1" into. I have the appropriate breaks
and the footer is not linked to previous. The problem is, when I insert the
"1" it appears to work fine. In the footer it shows "1" exactly where I want
it to. When I close the footer the "1" changes to a "2". No matter what I do
I can't get it to stay at "1". I've tried using text boxes instead but I just
can't stand that. Does anyone know how to get it to stay at "1"? Thanks for
all your help!

When you say appropriate breaks, I assume that you mean a Section Break
before the page on which you want the page number to appear. If that is the
case, you need to use the format page number button on the Headers and
Footers toolbar and set the starting number to one.
