footer page number problems

I have a 600 page document that has 8 chapters and 17
appendices. :-[ The chapters are numbered (Chapter 1, 2,
etc) while the appendices are lettered (Appendices A, B,
etc). I am now placing page numbers in the footer. My
chapter and the first 3 appendice page numbers worked
fine, however when I add page numbers to Appendices D, I
can not get the first page to start with the number 1.
When I go into the header/footer toolbar and tell it to
start at 1, it starts at 2 and if I tell it to start at
zero, it starts at zero. I use a different first page
footer as well as a different odd and even page footer. I
have tied it to the previous section and have removed
the "same as previous" designation and get the same
result. I have also verified there is also no extra
section break between the pages here. I use the Chapter
number/Appendix letter as part of the page number, if
that makes any difference. The only thing I have been
able to do is to manually make the change and place a "1"
there, but as soon as I update the page number, it goes
back to the way it was and I would have to change all the
pages in the section manually as well. The only answer
I've been able to come with is to remove the page number
from the first page, place it manually and start the
numbering sequence on page 2, but I would rather fix the
problem properly. Any advice out there? Thanks.

Suzanne,
When I create a section break, I always tell it to start
the next section on an odd page, however, that is not
always what the section break says when I'm in normal
view (although most of the them say Section break [odd
page]). It says sometimes Section break (even page), but
when I click on it and the dialogue box opens, it says
the next page will start on an odd page. Even when I
reapply as a section break odd page, it does not change
it in the normal view.

I also tried taking the numbering system off the first
page and then applying it to subsequent pages, but it
doesn't matter on what page I start (on many of the
appendices) I can never get 1 to be the first page number
of the section. It's very strange to me.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

What type of section start do you have?

With the insertion point in the section that is beginning on an even page
(which is the cause of your numbering problems), go to Page Setup and change
the "Section start."
