footer problem

I had an artist-designed letterhead on Word 2007 or 2003 (a recent
version of Word). Word 2008 stretches the page out to legal size. I
can return it to letter size but Word 2008 refuses to move the footer
to that size. Instead, when I print I get a message that says "a
footer of section one is set outside the printable area of the page.
Do you want to continue?" If I say yes, it prints it as legal. If I
say no, it prints it as letter but cuts off the footer. Any help?

Although that's how it may seem, but I seriously doubt that Word is
stretching anything:)

The most likely cause of the problem is that the doc was designed based on a
different *printer* than what you have on your Mac, and that the Mac's
printer has a different minimum margin requirement than the other printer
had. You may be able to resolve it by simply increasing the bottom margin
and/or the Footer margin a bit (it's often the bottom margin that bears the
largest minimum).

If that doesn't resolve it, turn on the non-printing characters (¶) and post
back with what you see at the bottom of the document. There may be something
else "designed" into the file that's causing the problem.

Sounds like the Footer may not actually "be" a footer. It sounds as though
it is a floating graphic.

In which case, it is positioned an exact measurement from the top of the
page, and it is not actually "within" the margins.

If that's the case, when Word changes the margins, this will have no effect
because the graphic is not being controlled by the margins, it is positioned
with respect to the top left corner of the "sheet of paper".

To fix this, use View>Header and Footer to open your footer and move the
graphic inside it. You will need to set its Layout to "Inline with Text"
first.
