Footer style not in Available Styles list

I posted the same problem in mac.office.word, but perhaps gave too much
detail.

I'm creating a document to turn into a template for chapter books. In turn,
that template will be the starting point for a short book template and a
third template. That means I want to make sure this document and thus
template is rock solid.

After some difficulty, the document seems completely fine except for the
Footer style. The style is still applied to every footer, but the style
itself doesn't appear in the Formatting Palette > Style > List > Available
Styles, although every other style used in the document seems too.

The Footer style does, however, appear in the Format > Style > Styles in Use
list. It also appears in the Formatting Palette if you switch the list to
show All Styles.

Why does the list no longer show the Footer style under Available Styles
like it did before the problems? Especially since it's a built-in style
that's being used in the document.

Although there's the obvious work around, I'm nervous about creating
templates and documents off this without resolving this issue, or at least
finding out what caused it.

I haven't found anything in my searches on where the Available Styles is
populating from.

I didn't mention that after the difficulty, we saved the DOC file to RTF.
Then opened RTF and saved back to DOC. I assumed this would ensure a clean
doc.

However, browsing old messages on the list I saw a reference to
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DocumentCorruption.html. I went ahead and tried the
save as web and that made the style appear in the Available Styles list.

Doesn't saving the file to RTF do the same thing as saving to HTML, in that
includes instructions on formatting, not the formatting itself?

Thanks for the resources that led me to fixing this! If there's anything
else you think I should watch out for in this doc, I'd appreciate the heads
up.

Dear Andrea. I don't know how it works in the Mac version, but in th
Win version "available styles" is a misleading term in Word. I
doesn't show all available styles but merely the ones that have bee
checked. To display, select "Custom Styles" and find the Footer Styl
in the list, likely cleared. Tick the box and you'r in business. HTH

This seems to focus on older versions (The style wasn't showing in Word
2004). As I mentioned, it seemed to be related to some lingering corruption
in the document, because the style went from showing in the Available List,
to not showing, to after saving as a web file and back to doc, to showing in
Available again.

Does anyone have information on how saving to RTF and back to DOC differs
from saving to web and back to Doc? Doesn't RTF clear out any corrupt issues
like saving to web does?
