footers in master doc

T

tammy

My master doc is broken down into sub docs and sections.
I put footers throughout the whole doc. Saved, closed and
then opened one of the sub documents and it had the footer
from the master doc on them.
Is there a way I can just have the footer on the master
doc and not the sub docs original file? I'm using word
2000.

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm> for more
information on what goes wrong, and <URL:
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/General/RecoverMasterDocs.htm> for ideas on
how to salvage what you can.

Sorry, doesn't answer your question but you may need the above info more
than you need an answer.

Hi Tammy,

This depends to a certain extent on how you've built the
Master Doc, and exactly what section-related formatting you
need to maintain that's coming across from the individual
sub-docs.

Assuming the answer to the last is "none", then it ought to
be possible to delete the section break Word is inserting at
the END of the sub docs; the footer information would then be
stored in the section break contained in the Master Doc,
itself. (When you insert a Sub doc into a Master doc, two
section breaks are created, one in the subdoc and the other
in the Master doc).
