Footers in Right/Left Margin

Anyone know how to setup something like a header or
footer but instead of them being at the top and bottom I
want them in the left and right margins of mirrored pages.

Hmmm?

Headers and footers can actually go anywhere on the page. Either, put the
information in a textbox anchored to the header or footer; or set the page
top- and/or bottom- margins to the _negative_ of the normal value. This
tells Word that the margin is fixed, not affected by the amount of text in
the header. (Eg if your header is normally 2cm and you put 5cm of text in
the header, the body of the document is pushed downwards; if you set the
margin to -2cm, the text will start at 2cm and you'll get three cm of
overlap.)

To make the setup different for left and right pages, select 'Different Left
and Right' on the Layout tab of the File > Page Setup dialog. You'll need to
do the headers and footers independently for left and right.

On the Layout tab of Page Setup, check the box for "Different odd and even."
This will give you separate Odd Page Header/Footer and Even Page
Header/Footer, into which you can put your header/footer content. As
"martinique" says, this can be a text box anchored to the header and can
appear anywhere on the page. Use the Text Direction command to rotate the
text if necessary. If you want the header/footer to be in the header/footer
area but just extending into the margins, you can set negative indents on
the Header/Footer paragraph.

What an interesting trick!

How did you discover this?

It's buried in the documentation somewhere. No idea where ...

Do you know of other cases where negative numbers produce
"interesting" results?

no, but I'll bet there are some
