Footers in Word

I have a document with multiple sections and am having problems with the
numbering scheme in it in Word 2003. The first section I do not want included
in the page count, and Sections 2-x will be included in the pagecount. I have
it set up as "Page x of y" and I have gotten it so x starts at 1 on the first
page of my second section and increases the way I expect it to through all
the sections. I am having problems getting the "of y" number to calculate
correctly. I have one paragraph that will always be at the end of the first
section, so I have added a bookmark there. Then for the "y" portion, I
inserted a Field and clicked the Formula button. The formula I entered is:
={NUMPAGES} - {PAGEREF EndOfFront}.

This bookmark name is correct, I have checked it multiple times. If I just
insert {NUMPAGES} or {PAGEREF EndOfFront} it displays the correct number, but
by trying to do this subtraction, it always displays as "!Syntax Error, {".
What do I need to do to fix this? When I right-click on the field and Toggle
Field Codes, I see: "{ ={NUMPAGES} - {PAGEREF EndOfFront} }".

Thanks for your help!
Todd
