footers with filename/path in global template

I followed notes for older verions of Word (I have 2000)
and I have filename and path (and I did date etc) come up
automatically when I open the normal template but I want
it to show on any new documents as I open them and it is
not doing that eg: file-new without finding normal.dot.
Would also like to do it for Excel 2000.
