footnote corruption

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum. I am using Word 97 (with latest updates) in Windows
XP.
Recently I have a 10 page document I had created which included multiple
(42) footnotes. After all was finished - seemingly alright - I noticed that
after about 1/3 of the way into the document, the footnotes had become
corrupted. When I would put my mouse over a footnote number in the text,
what I saw was part of another footnote text. I tried everything I could
think of to fix the problem, including deleting what I thought might be the
offending footnotes (where the problem started) to no avail.

I did not know about this newsgroup then and ended having to delete all the
footnotes in the bottom 2/3 of the document and recreating them all over
again by typing it all over. What can cause this type of problem and how can
I avoid it in the future?

Thanks
