Footnote corruption

In word all my footnotes have turned into boxes. Does anybody have a solution
how to convert it back?

Select one and change the FONT to one that is installed on your system. If
it changes to readable text, that's your answer.

If it doesn't, then I would like to know what you did between the last time
when you saw they were OK and now.

Gee, Arnold, perhaps someone could if they had a better idea of what they
were dealing with:) "Word" covers nearly 25 years of versions on several
different operating systems as well as a variety of hardware platforms.

Believe it or not, each combination has its own set of peculiarities which
in many cases are anywhere from slightly to radically different from any
other combination. In order to provide a useful suggestion rather than a
litany of "Here's a thousand & one things to try" perhaps it would help if
you'd provide some indication of what specific version of Word is involved,
which version of what OS you're running it in as well a some specifics about
the source of the document and any other details about changes that may have
recently taken place.

It also appears that you may have gotten to this group by some manner of
misdirection - it's primarily for users of Word for Mac. If my hunch is
correct you may be using a PC version, so you may be better off supplying
the requested information to one of the Word for Windows groups here:

hi cybertaz,

I am not suprisingly a newby at these sorts of communities, however if you
would be able to help me in any way that would be greatly appreciated!.

I am using windows 2000 professional and word 2000 as well. the problem
basically looks like footnote numbers changed into small squares. I've been
opening this document in various computers probably using different types of
microsoft word.

thanks

Hi Arnold -

OK - Now we have a better idea what you're dealing with - Thanks for the
update. Take a look at the reply from John McGhie & try what he suggested.
The cause may very well be a font issue & that little test will help
determine if that's the case. Having opened/edited the doc with other
versions of Word is not as likely to have caused the problem as the manner
in which it has been revised.

However, there could be any number of other causes and although nobody here
has any objection to helping users of PC Word if we can, your case is a bit
of a problem. Your version is of such a vintage that even those of us who
use both PCs & Macs probably don't have Office 2000 up and running any
longer. This could be a bit involved to trace and without having the
software available we would be relying very heavily on memory - which could
be quite faulty:) The last thing we want to do is give you bad advice. But
John & a few others would be more apt to accurate recollections than I.

If you use the link in my previous reply you're far more likely to get the
attention of someone who has used that version more extensively and may even
have it readily available to test as necessary.

Hi Arnold:

Ah hah! "Missing Symbol Font" :)

(See what difference a version number makes?)

Go into Format>Style and change the Font of the Footnote Number style to a
font that is installed on your computer (try Times New Roman) and all should
be right again.

Cheers
