Footnote Formatting?

HELP! Word has suddenly changed my footnote formatting. While each
reference is single-spaced within itself, they are separated...like
this:

1. Author, Title, blah blah blah, 303.

2. Another footnote, this one includes three references, but instead of
being in one lump, they are separated.

See so and so's book.

Also see this guy's argument in this article...

They shouldn't look like this, and I've gone in and selected all the
footnotes, and tried to make them all single spaced, and it tells me
they are, but they still look like the above. I'm at my wits' end, and
the microsoft people aren't terribly helpful, although they managed to
recreate the problem, which is at least somewhat useful, as I know it's
not just me.

Has anyone had this problem before, and how did you fix it? I don't
want to have to hand do 800 some odd footnotes for my dissertation!

Thanks!

Just a guess, Melissa, but you're probably pressing Enter at the spots where
the 'gaps' are occuring. It isn't line spacing, but spacing before/after
paras that is most likely causing the problem.

If I'm right, you can a) use Shift+Enter instead, b) modify the Footnote
Text stlye (although that will tighten up all footnotes), or c) change the
para formatting for the footnote(s) to remove spacing before/after.

More input on this will probably show up here as well.
