Footnote not appearing

I already have two footnote that are OK.
I tried to enter a third, the location dropped to the bottom of the next
page below the margin line, no number appeared, and when I type no text
appears. Font color is set on automatic and the footnote table looks the same
as normal with continuous numbering.
Version is Word 2002 SP2
What is happening and how can I correct it?
Thanks.

Can you see the seemingly missing footnote in Normal view, if you click View
| Footnotes?

Also, are you inserting the notes in table cells?

Stefan:
It was not a table.
The footnote indeed appears in the normal view.
I eventually solved the problem by copying the desired page to a new file,
inserting the footnote, and then copying the page back into the original
document when it appeared just fine in the correct position.
However I tried inserting another footnote and the same problem: footnote a
page lower, not visible in print view and below the margin.
I tried printing: it prints, but a page further on than it should be and
below the bottom page margin.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
