Footnote numbering and section breaks

A

Alex

I have difficulties to control the numbering of footnotes in a
somewhat complex document.

The document consists of two parts, 5 sections (chapters) each part;
the sections serve, in particular, but not only, to start each chapter
on an odd page.

I whish to separately number the footnotes in each of the two parts,
that is to restart from 1 the numbering in the Part Two of the
document and continue across the remaining 5 sections.

Now, I have, of course, the result that the numbering is restarted
from 1 not only once, but in *every* of the last 5 sections.

Is there a way to control the numbering in the second part the way I
want, that is continuously all the way through the end?

TIA

Alex

Unless you want to replace your section breaks with page breaks in Chapters
2+ (and it sounds like you don't) your options are limited.

It's a pain, I know, but would you consider manually numbering your
footnotes in Chapter 1, using a custom mark instead of auto numbering? If
your footnotes are numbered 1, 2, 3 etc you could use numbers as your custom
marks.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to force footnote numbers to
restart at section breaks using a macro. You can set the starting number but
only when numbering is set to continuous, and the starting number only
applies to the first footnote in the document.

Master/sub documents don't seem to be an option for you because subdocs are
inserted into the master doc as sections rather than separate documents -
when the subdocs are compiled into a master doc, the master doc's footnote
numbering restart option governs.

Thank you Chuck

I will replace the section breaks with page breack in the defintive
version, where necessary.

Thanks again
