footnote numbering

footnote numbering is incorrect
footnote start at 1 then next is 4 and then skip to 4 and the are in correct sequence for the rest of the document

Possible explanations:

1) Track Changes (or Markup, or Reviewing features) is on. View |
Markup--does anything show up? The numbers will sort themselves out when
all the Changes have been Accepted or Rejected.

2) Document may be corrupt, try fixes here:
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DocumentCorruption.html

3) Footnotes 2 and 3 were deleted by deleting the text at the bottom of
the page instead of the reference number in the main text.
