Footnote numbers changed to little squares

Michelle

Please Help. I wrote a paper on a PC, included footnotes, and page
numbers, and section breaks. I opened it on my new Mac and somewhere
along the way, the section breaks disappeared; the page numbers,
insead of just a number, show "two squares, Page #, two squares"; and
worst, the footnotes are not numbers anymore- they are squares too!!.
I have hundreds of footnotes in this paper and they all look the same-
little squares (or rectangles I guess). Does anybody know how to fix
this? New footnotes go in as numbers, and if inserted as the 40th
footnote, the number 40 goes in, but how do I fix the ones that are
already in the paper? I have tried changing fonts and some formatting
changes, but I have no idea what else to try. Please help!!

Hi Michelle,

I exchange papers with footnotes between Mac and PC all the time, and
this doesn't normally happen.

It's possible that you used File | Open to open the document, and that
Open was set to Recover Text from Any File.

But my guess would be that the document is corrupt. MAKE A COPY OF IT,
and then try these fixes:

Do you still have a good copy on the PC that you can return to?

How did you transfer it from the PC to the Mac? Is a copy accessible
somewhere as an email attachment?

What version of OS and Word, on both the Mac and the PC?

What font are you using?
