footnote numbers not in superscript

amy

I am editing a document with track changes turned on and my footnotes
are all appearing in fullsize roman type. I can't get them to convert
to superscript without highlighting each one individually adn
formatting the text that way (way too time consuming for a heavy edit
on a long document). I haven't had this problem before on my computer.
any thoughts?
thanks

Assuming these are footnotes that Word inserted, generated, and numbered:

Footnote numbers are automatically formatted in Footnote Reference style.
The style may have lost superscript as part of it's definition. To add
superscript back, click Format | Style, select Footnote Reference in left
column, click Modify, check "add to template" but *not* "automatically
update", and use the Format drop down menu in the Modify dialog to add
superscript.

That should fix it. If all the existing footnote numbers do not change, go
to Find & Replace, click the arrow for More/bigger dialog, and use the
Format drop down menu to format both Find and Replace as Footnote Reference
style, leaving the actual boxes empty. That should reapply the style.

If that doesn't work, post back with Word and OS versions, and exactly at
what point it went wrong.
