footnote numbers

Whenever I insert a footnote (using Word 2002) the
footnote number is not raised but appears immediately
adjacent to the word I am footnoting, like this: House1.
How can I get the number to be raised?

By default, all inserted note numbers are formatted in the Footnote
Reference style. You need to format the style to be superscript, somehow
yours got changed.

In older versions, you could select the footnote number, go to Format |
Style, which would come up with the style selected. Then click on Modify,
and in the next dialog check "add to template" and use the Format menu at
the bottom to change the Font settings. In Word 2002, I am not sure of the
path to the dialog to Modify a Style, but Help should tell you how.
