footnote reference and justified spacing...

Hello all. First time.

I have two problems with unwanted space after (or before) footnote references when paragraphs are justified.

1) in the footnotes where all the lines are justified, unwanted space is sometimes found after the footnote number. I believe it is part of the justifying that the Word performs automatically, but I can't seem to keep the first word of the line stick to the footnote number without any space. How do I fix this?

2) in the main body text where again all the lines are justified, unwanted space is sometimes found before the footnote number (after too, but I can live with that). Again, I believe it is part of Word's attempt to justify and distributing space throughout the line. But how do I tell it not to touch the space between a word or punctuation and the footnote number?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The normal space is called a "space band" and its width is variable. If you
justify the text, the justifying application varies the width of ordinary
spaces as needed.

There are a variety of "fixed spaces" available in Unicode. Two
commonly-used ones are available in the Insert>Character dialog. But for a
wider selection, search in Character Palette for "space".

The non-breaking space has a width of one en, and it's useful for "sticking"
numbers on the same line as the following word. The hair space and the
zero-width space are useful for curing the other problem you mentioned.

These days, I will not justify text unless the customer insists on it. It
simply makes it difficult to read! There's some interesting research that
proves that serif fonts and justified text substantially lower the reader's
reading speed and knowledge retentively.
