This is just a whinge, to get it off my chest. No response needed.
In Word 2004, selecting a sentence (with Cmd-click or F8, F8, F8)
includes in the selection any footnote reference mark at the end of the
sentence, even if it comes after the full stop. That makes sense. But
the selection *also* includes a footnote reference mark that appears
immediately after the full stop at the end of the *previous* sentence.
That footnote mark obviously belongs to the previous sentence. Whatever
the user wants to do with the selected sentence, s/he is unlikely to
want to do the same thing with the footnote at the end of the previous
sentence too. So you have to manually detach the footnote from the
selected sentence before you proceed.
This is easy enough to work round, obviously. But it becomes pretty
irritating if (like mine) your work includes a footnote after almost
every sentence. It's unbelievable that Microsoft are still getting this
sort of thing wrong. It's as if they never actually use the program
themselves, or talk to anyone who does.
Rant over. Thanks for listening.
