Footnote reference problem

I have a problem with a document someone has sent me.

It needs footnotes added but when I add one the footnote reference in
the text just appears as a number in the same font and size as the
text. I want it to be a superscript as normal.

When I try to modify the style I find that for the footnote reference
all of the features such as superscript, subscript, underline etc etc
are greyed and ticked. If I try to untick them all except superscript I
find that all of the become unticked, and if I tick superscript then
subscript also become ticked.

If I accept this then when I add a footnote the reference is a
subscript not a superscript!

How can I get it to act normally?

Thanks

Peter

First, your document came from someone else and you may have imported their
messes.

Try opening a blank document of your own and copying the document you
received into your new blank document. Do you still have this problem?

You could also open up "Organizer" and copy Normal and Footnote text from
your template to the document you received from your friend. Problem still?

Second, are you trying to modify the style "Footnote text"? If so, that
would only affect the formatting of the actual footnote, not the number of
the footnote that is inserted as a superscript in the body of the document.
My footnote numbers in the body have the "Normal" style.

Third, I don't have the problem of greyed out and ticked boxes in the
"Footnote text" style, which reinforces my thought that the document you
received came with problems.

I have Word 2003 with XP Pro.
